Palliative Care is all about looking after patients with life limiting illnesses, relieving their suffering and supporting them through difficult times.  The main objective is to improve the quality of life.

People affected by life limiting illnesses (such as Cancer, stroke, heart diseases and HIV) often feel hopeless and society neglects them. In their deprived situation, they suffer from excruciating pain and other problems such as lack of food, soap, clothes, beddings, supportive devices, and social isolation.  Palliative Care adds life and value to such lifeless situations, restoring hope and function, providing relief from pain and indignity of the prolonged suffering.  Even when cure is not possible, there is much that can be done.

Palliative Care service is available at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital through Tiyanjane and Umodzi Palliative Care Clinics and are accessible for free.  Palliative Care Support Trust was established in 2005 to support the provision of palliative care and enable the clinics access external funding and to scale up their activities.  Some of the activities include home visits for patients who are too sick to travel or too far from the hospital; orients Social workers and spiritual leaders to support people in the community; offers theoretic knowledge and hands on clinical placement for Clinicians and nurses; and also specialist knowledge.  Our skilled staff members are able to add evidence based practice to those who are starting out through mentorship and supervision programs

Currently, our latest 3 year grant providing mentorship and support finishes in June 2021.  Our reserves are also depleted.  Without additional support most of our key staff members will be forces to leave the service.
